The country’s first needle-free adrenaline nasal spray, EURneffy®, is now available on prescription for people with serious allergies.

This new treatment is a breakthrough in emergency anaphylaxis care. For years, adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) have been the only way to self-administer adrenaline during a life-threatening allergic reaction. EURneffy® changes that, delivering life-saving adrenaline without a needle, using a quick and easy-to-use nasal spray.

How does EURneffy® work?

EURneffy® contains 2mg of adrenaline in a single-use nasal spray. It’s designed for adults and children who weigh 30kg or more.

At the first sign of anaphylaxis, the user inserts the nozzle into one nostril and presses the plunger to release the full dose. The adrenaline is absorbed through the nasal lining and enters the bloodstream quickly, even if their nose is congested from hay fever or any other allergies.

Clinical studies and real-world data show that EURneffy® delivers adrenaline just as effectively as an injection, providing the fast response needed in emergencies. *

The spray is compact and ready-to-use. It can also be administered to unconscious patients, as it doesn’t require inhalation. This may help reduce hesitation or panic during a crisis.

How can people get it?

EURneffy® is a prescription-only medicine. Anyone interested in this needle-free option should speak to their GP. It may take some time for all GP practices to be able to prescribe EURneffy®, and this will vary between clinics. However, plans are in place to make it accessible to everyone as soon as possible.

Importantly, EURneffy® is an additional, licensed option for emergency treatment of anaphylaxis. Some people may choose to switch from an AAI to EURneffy after discussing it with their GP or allergy specialist; others may prefer to keep using AAIs. It is not a requirement to carry both — follow the advice of your clinician about what’s right for you and always carry two doses of adrenaline.

A welcome choice for people with allergies

“Anaphylaxis is a serious and life-threatening allergic reaction that can happen within minutes of exposure to an allergen, such as foods, insect stings, or certain medications. Adrenaline is the first-line treatment and giving it quickly is crucial to prevent serious complications. For many years, adrenaline auto-injectors have been the only way to deliver this life-saving medicine. It’s therefore welcome news that an alternative delivery method is now available in EURneffy®, a nasal spray that offers a needle-free option for administering adrenaline. For some people, its design may help reduce hesitation and increase confidence in using adrenaline promptly in an emergency. Having different options available can only be a positive step in supporting people living with serious allergies.”

For those living with severe allergies, more choice means more confidence. And EURneffy® is a timely addition to the toolkit for managing anaphylaxis.
