More about the course

Part 1 – covers allergen avoidance, early recognition of symptoms and crisis management. This part of the course focuses on managing serious allergies mainly within school or early years settings. There is emphasis on avoiding allergens and the need to undertake risk assessments to ensure that children living with serious allergies are able to join in all aspects of the curriculum, along with their classmates.

Who is the course useful for?

This course is suitable for school nurses, health visitors and other healthcare professionals working in a community setting who have responsibility for training other staff working in schools, early years and other relevant environments which involve contact with people with serious allergies.

Why the course is important

With 5% – 8% of children under 16 affected by food allergy, managing students at risk of anaphylaxis in early years and school is a serious and very real practical issue for most schools and nurseries

The most serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) usually begins within minutes and can be life-threatening. The more staff that are allergy aware, understand the importance of allergen avoidance, know the signs of an allergic reaction and what to do in an emergency, the safer everyone with allergies in schools and nurseries will be.
