How serious allergies affect young children

Why the course is important

There are national minimum standards that early years providers must meet, such as the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework in England. Early years settings are required to obtain information about children’s health and dietary requirements – including food allergies – before they attend, and record and act on the information provided.

The most serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) usually begins within minutes and can be life-threatening. Anaphylaxis in babies and toddlers can be particularly challenging to recognise, and they are less able to express their feelings or give early warning of symptoms.

We encourage a whole setting allergy awareness approach, as this is the safest way to manage children with allergies. The more staff who have an understanding of allergies, can recognise the signs of anaphylaxis and know what to do in an emergency, the safer all children with allergies will be.

Allergy Awareness and Inclusivity

All early years settings who complete our AllergyWise® online training course are eligible for our AllergyWise® Early Years Setting award. The award recognises settings who complete our online training, have robust allergy protocols in place, encourage allergy awareness with staff and children, and ensure the setting is an inclusive environment for children with allergies.

Awarded settings will receive a digital certificate and a digital logo to use on their website and letterheads.
