An Indian restaurant and takeaway, JR Uxbridge Ltd (trading as Javitri), has been fined over £40,000 after pleading guilty to five offences related to health and safety at work, food information, and food safety and hygiene regulations at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court.
The prosecution by Hillingdon Council followed a complaint from a customer with a nut allergy who suffered a serious allergic reaction and required hospitalisation after consuming a meal with undeclared allergens.
Council investigations revealed “significant failures” at the premises, including incorrect storage of nuts, incomplete menu descriptions, and uncertainty regarding recipes. Despite a detailed report and subsequent notices from council officers outlining necessary improvements, little progress was found in further inspections.
The company was fined £35,000 and required to pay a victim surcharge of £5,000 and the council’s prosecution costs of £3,816.
We would like to commend Hillingdon Council officers for bringing this prosecution and supporting businesses to improve food safety for customers with allergies.
