As the weather warms up and we spend more time outdoors, it’s important to take steps to stay safe from insect stings—especially if you or someone you care for is allergic.

The good news is that with a few simple precautions, you can still enjoy summer while reducing your risk of being stung.

Here are our top tips for avoiding insect stings this summer:

  • Don’t go barefoot outdoors
Walking around in bare feet or sandals can make you more vulnerable to stings, especially in grassy areas where insects may be hiding.
  • Avoid strong perfumes and scented products
Fragrances in perfumes, hairsprays, and other cosmetics can attract insects. Try to choose unscented alternatives where possible.
  • Cover up
Wearing long sleeves and trousers can help keep insects away from your skin.  Avoid bright colours and loose-fitting clothing, as these can attract insects or make it easier for them to reach your skin.
  • Stay calm around insects
If a bee or wasp comes near you, try not to panic or swat at it. Move away slowly and calmly. If it lands on you, stay still—it will usually fly off within seconds.
  • Never attempt to remove a nest yourself
If you discover a nest of wasps or bees in your home or garden, contact your local authority or a professional pest control service. Trying to deal with it yourself can be dangerous.
  • Clean up after eating or drinking
Food and sugary drinks can attract insects. Wipe your mouth and wash your hands after eating to reduce your risk of being stung.
  • Choose a safe spot to eat outdoors
Look for areas free of insect activity before sitting down for a picnic. If there are lots of bees or wasps around, it may be safer to eat indoors instead.
  • Keep food and drinks covered
Insects are drawn to uncovered food and drink. Always check before eating or drinking—wasps can sneak into cans! Drinks with straws or bottles with lids are a safer choice.
  • Avoid open rubbish bins
Outdoor bins can be a magnet for insects, so try to steer clear of them when spending time outside.

By taking these precautions, you can make the most of the summer while keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. If you or someone you know has an insect sting allergy, it’s especially important to be prepared and informed.
