Now that summer is finally here, it’s important to think about how warmer weather can affect your medications—especially if you have serious allergies. Adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) are life-saving devices used to treat serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and they require proper care to work effectively in an emergency.

Here’s how you can keep your AAIs safe this summer:

Always carry two in-date AAIs

Anyone at risk of anaphylaxis should always carry two in-date AAIs at all times.

This ensures you’re prepared in case a second dose is needed before medical help arrives.

Always follow the official instructions for storage that come with your AAIs. These are:

  • EpiPen®

Adrenaline is sensitive to light and can be damaged by high or low temperatures. Do not store your EpiPen® above 25°C and do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep the EpiPen® container in the outer carton to protect from light.

  • Jext®

Jext® should be stored within the flip-top case provided. Store below 25°C. Do not freeze.

Storing your AAIs in hot weather

Proper storage is crucial to keep your AAIs effective. Here’s how to protect them from summer heat:

  • Temperature: AAIs should be stored at room temperature, below 25°C.
  • Avoid the fridge or freezer: Extreme cold can damage the device’s internal mechanisms.
  • Heat sensitivity: Temperatures above 25°C can affect the potency and stability of the adrenaline. In the hot weather, temperature control for adrenaline auto-injectors is important to make sure they will work when needed.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight: Exposure to UV radiation can cause the adrenaline to degrade over time. It’s important to store AAIs in a dark location out of direct sunlight but ensure it is still accessible.
  • Never leave it in the car: The temperature inside a parked car can soar rapidly, especially in direct sunlight. This can compromise the effectiveness of your AAIs, in an emergency.
  • Use an insulated bag: There are special bags you can buy to protect your AAIs from the heat. You need to look for medical grade insulin bags. They will protect from heat and cold. You can store an ice pack in a cooler bag with your AAIs but be sure to place a barrier—such as a towel or cloth—between them. Never allow the AAIs to rest directly on the ice pack or come close to freezing temperatures.
  • Check the liquid: AAIs have a small viewing window. The adrenaline should appear clear and colourless, with no visible particles. If you notice any discolouration or cloudiness, the device should be replaced immediately.

If your AAIs are out of date or damaged, contact your GP or pharmacist as soon as possible to get new pens. You can explore our Adrenaline Auto-Injector Expiry Dates page which can direct you to a free expiry alert service with your adrenaline auto-injector brand.
