Now that summer is finally here, it’s important to think about how warmer weather can affect your medications—especially if you have serious allergies. Adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) are life-saving devices used to treat serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and they require proper care to work effectively in an emergency.
Here’s how you can keep your AAIs safe this summer:
Always carry two in-date AAIs
Anyone at risk of anaphylaxis should always carry two in-date AAIs at all times.
This ensures you’re prepared in case a second dose is needed before medical help arrives.
Always follow the official instructions for storage that come with your AAIs. These are:
Adrenaline is sensitive to light and can be damaged by high or low temperatures. Do not store your EpiPen® above 25°C and do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep the EpiPen® container in the outer carton to protect from light.
Jext® should be stored within the flip-top case provided. Store below 25°C. Do not freeze.
Storing your AAIs in hot weather
Proper storage is crucial to keep your AAIs effective. Here’s how to protect them from summer heat:
If your AAIs are out of date or damaged, contact your GP or pharmacist as soon as possible to get new pens. You can explore our Adrenaline Auto-Injector Expiry Dates page which can direct you to a free expiry alert service with your adrenaline auto-injector brand.
