November 2015: A new guidance document has been launched to provide food manufacturers, retailers and enforcement authorities with essential advice on what must be considered before making a ‘free-from’ claim on a product.

The document has been produced jointly by the BRC and FDF with the support of the Anaphylaxis Campaign and Coeliac UK.

At present, with the exception of ‘gluten-free’, there are no specific rules at either UK or EU level governing the use of ‘free-from’ claims. Neither is there any publically available guidance for businesses on making such claims.

The aim is to ensure that ‘free-from’ claims are applied accurately and consistently across the whole food industry. The organisations involved agree that a decision to make a ‘free from’ claim cannot be taken lightly.
