Autumn is a favourite time of year for many, with crisp mornings and cosy evenings, back to school and a return to normality, not to mention Halloween and Bonfire nights.
Unfortunately, allergies are still very much present and can create new challenges as the year progresses. Here are some practical tips to help families stay safe and enjoy the colder months.
Believe it or not, fallen, damp leaves and compost heaps can trigger reactions, particularly if they’re hiding mould spores. When gardening, wear gloves and a mask, avoid leaf piles and shower after outdoor chores.
You can find out more in our Mould Allergy Factsheet.
Increased use of bonfires and wood burners, particularly around Bonfire Night, can also cause irritated airways so make sure to stay upwind if you are having a bonfire, and keep windows at home closed during neighbourhood bonfires. If you have been prescribed an inhaler, keep this accessible.
Flu and colds are also prevalent during this time of year and can exacerbate allergy symptoms . If eligible, consider a flu vaccination. If you have an egg allergy and are concerned about vaccines, egg-free flu vaccines are also available. Please see our egg allergy factsheet for more information.
If you carry adrenaline devices, make sure they are not stored in extreme cold temperatures and consider storing them in an insulated bag.
Autumn condensation, particularly in wetter areas like kitchens, bathrooms and any area that is poorly ventilated, can lead to mould, which is harmful to health in a number of ways. Wipe condensation and ventilate rooms regularly. Consider a dehumidifier if needed.
Harvest is here, meaning foods such as apples, pears and plums are in abundance, which is not so enjoyable if you suffer with an allergy to these fruits. Always check ingredient labels carefully.
If you’re attending a harvest market or event, you may come across roasted nut stands, chestnuts and other seasonal street foods. Check labels and always carry two adrenaline devices at all times.
Next month, we’ll be diving deeper into the best way to have an allergy-safe and inclusive Halloween.
