For healthcare professionals, this means that being prepared to recognise and manage allergic reactions safely is essential.

Why anaphylaxis training is essential in clinical, dental and aesthetic practice

The most serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) usually begins within minutes and can be life-threatening. Hospital admissions for allergies and anaphylaxis in England have more than doubled in the past 20 years.

Allergies can present themselves in various ways in healthcare settings. It can affect how food is prepared and what choices are available if admitted to hospital, the drugs prescribed, the use of latex-containing products, and the use of cleaning products. This makes allergy awareness essential so that you can provide the best, safest care, and in emergencies, it can save lives.

Course outline

  • Recognising symptoms of serious allergic reactions

Learn the important ABC symptoms, as well as milder symptoms, and how these can present themselves so that you can confidently recognise a serious allergic reaction as early as possible.

  • Avoiding allergen exposure

Allergens can be encountered in many aspects of healthcare delivery — from prescribed medications and hospital meals to medical products and cleaning materials. This course highlights the importance of taking an accurate allergy history and following allergy safety procedures.

  • Use of all current licenced adrenaline devices – EpiPen®, Jext® and EURneffy ®

In a 2024 survey by the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) of over 1,100 newly qualified UK doctors revealed significant gaps in training and confidence with just 37% felt confident teaching a patient how to use an adrenaline auto-injector. In this course you’ll learn how to obtain a free training device and how to use them.

  • How to respond in an emergency

In a serious allergic reaction, timing is key. Understanding the steps to take and feeling confident to act as quickly as possible can save a life.

  • Supporting patients with ongoing allergy management plans

Effective allergy care extends beyond emergency response. The course also highlights the importance of risk assessment and preventative planning to ensure that individuals living with serious allergies can safely participate in healthcare, education, work and community settings.

What Healthcare Professionals say about this course

‘I have found the AllergyWise® course invaluable in my role and it gives me confidence that I am maintaining my own knowledge in order to share the correct and most up-to-date knowledge with the people I train. The course is in a great format with different sections that don’t have to all be completed at once and keep record of where you have got up to. There are also quizzes along the way to check your understanding. After completion you are able to access the information for the rest of the year and so can look back on any areas as required. I would definitely recommend this course to others."

Donna Colligon – Community Nurse

"This informative and user-friendly course provided me with a comprehensive guide to allergy management and proved a timely recap on all things ‘allergy’ for a mother of a son with a serious peanut allergy! The course covered a range of topics such as; identifying and responding to allergic reactions; causes of reactions; available medications and their correct use and the prevention of allergies. I particularly liked the way in which my knowledge was checked at the end of each section without it feeling like a memory ‘test’. The positive re-cap system used at the end of each section allows time for you to re-think and change your mind without feeling that you have failed. All in all, a very enjoyable experience and one which both refreshed and increased my knowledge of allergy management."

Alison Streefland, Curriculum Development Officer – Welsh in English medium schools -Neath Port Talbot

“I found the Healthcare Professional’s Course informative and easy to navigate. The content was clear, engaging, and helped build both my confidence and my understanding of allergy and anaphylaxis. It’s a high‑quality course that made the subject feel accessible, and I would definitely recommend it”

Angela Glennon, Service Development Manager

"I have done this course twice in the past and have found each time that the content has changed and improved. There are more interesting developments which are described this time."

"Lovely course with good facts & training/slideshow very good."
