Goats’ milk formula not a solution for cows’ milk allergic infants

In February, an amendment to the infant formulae and follow-on formulae regulation came into effect. This amendment permits goats’ milk infant formula and follow-on formula to be sold on the UK market.

At this time, the Food Standards Agency expects that one company will be placing a goats milk formula on the UK market in May 2014 and other companies may also provide such products in future.

Clinical studies suggest the risk of cross-reactivity between cows’ and goats’ milk proteins in cows’ milk allergic infants to be high and can lead reactions. Therefore infant who are allergic to cows’ milk protein should avoid goat's milk infant formula and in follow-on formula.
