New BSACI 2021 guideline for the management of egg allergy

Egg allergy most commonly presents in infancy and around 1 in 50 children has an egg allergy. An updated guideline for the management of egg allergy has been announced by the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI). The guideline was revised by the BSACI Standards of Care Committee, which includes allergists, allergy specialist dieticians and psychologists working with egg-allergic patients, and the recommendations are evidence based.

The guideline is intended for allergists and others with a special interest in allergy. It covers diagnosis and treatment of patients with egg allergy, guidance for families with egg allergic children, as well as adult egg allergic patients.

The content includes updated guidance on:

• immunisation of egg allergic children
• the home introduction of egg, including an egg introduction ladder
• management of egg allergy in nurseries and schools
• the psychological and social implications of egg allergy
• egg allergy in adults
