Bee and Wasp Allergy

Allergy to – Insect Stings

Most people known to be at risk of a severe allergic reaction find the prospect of being stung very frightening. Fortunately the risks of this happening are reduced if sensible precautions are taken and the chances of a sting proving fatal are reduced considerably if the victim is carrying self-injectable adrenaline (also known as epinephrine).

www.UKWaspWatch.co.uk

Rentokil, the experts in pest control, reports a 13% increase on wasp enquiries versus the same period last year, following the unseasonably warm weather this spring.[1]Unsurprisingly, if you, or someone you know, suffers from a wasp allergy then time spent outside can be fraught and filled with fear of being stung.

Over 300,000 people in the UK may experience a severe allergic reaction when stung by a wasp and Rentokil are delighted to be working with The Anaphylaxis Campaign to encourage the UK to be more wasp aware. Rentokil have createdUKWaspWatch, an interactive map where wasp sightings can be logged, identifying wasp hotspots nationwide. Whenever a wasp or wasps’ nest sighting is logged onto the map throughout the wasp season, Rentokil will donate money to The Anaphylaxis Campaign.

There are now three ways to log wasp sightings together with their severity, from a single wasp or sting, to a massive wasps’ nest:

  • Visit www.ukwaspwatch.co.uk and log a sighting directly onto the map by following the simple instructions.
  • Enter your sighting via a special Facebook application
  • Tweet the hashtag #ukwaspwatch, your postcode and how serious the sighting is using the scale on the UKWaspWatch website.

If you have a wasp problem in your home, Rentokil offers products to get rid of small numbers of wasps quickly and efficiently. However, if you suspect you are sensitive to wasp stings, or you have a large wasps’ nest, Rentokil strongly recommends that you call in the professionals! A Rentokil pest controller will be able to identify the source of a large number of wasps, and treat the nest to remove the problem. A single nest may contain thousands of wasps which can be very dangerous if disturbed or provoked.

Remember to log any sightings onto www.ukwaspwatch.co.uk and help sufferers identify where wasps are most prevalent.
