Setting up a protocol
It is important for staff and parents to agree and adopt basic policies, governing both day-to-day life and emergency procedures.
Many schools have found it essential to draw up an individual protocol for any child with a severe allergy. This is agreed by the parents, the school (in consultation with the school nurse), the child’s treating doctor, and the education authority.
The protocol deals with all of the important issues, including:
-
Symptoms
-
Emergency procedure
-
medication
-
Food management
-
Staff training
-
Precautionary measures
-
Professional indemnity
-
Consent and agreement
