The All Party Parlimentary Group for Allergy Meeting - 3 December 2009

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Allergy, co-chaired by Jon Cruddas MP and Jo Swinson MP, hosted a meeting on 3 December 2009 to highlight some of the issues faced by young people with food allergy. These meetings are a way to inform MPs and grow our support base as well as giving those living with food allergy a chance to speak out. This event featured talks by prominent allergy specialists as well as young people living with the condition.

Parent Workshops

These Workshops are designed for Parents of chilren with severe allergy aged 3-11. The content of the Workshop aims to help parents of children at nursery, infant or junior school assess the risks associated with living with food allergy, have increased confidence in making management decisions and prepare for eventual "letting go" of their allergic child.

Family Workshops

Designed for youngsters with severe food allergy, aged 11 to 18 and their parents, young people have their workshop in one room whilst the parents are in a totally separate room, however the 2 groups follow similar agendas and cover the same topics. The aim of the workshops is to help the handing over of allergy management and responsibility to the allergic young person in a time and way that suits the whole family.

“I found it good to talk to people in the same situations as me, this has helped me to be more open about my allergy so I can talk to my friends about it without being embarrassed”– allergic young person aged 13.
