How Schools Can Help

Supporting the Anaphylaxis Campaign means that you will make a real difference to the thousands of people in the UK affected by life-threatening allergies. Many parents feel unsure how to cope with their child's allergy and they turn to us for support. Through our telephone helpline, website, publications and interactive workshops for parents and children, we are here to give them confidence in managing the risks associated with their allergic condition.

Educating your staff - With sound precautionary measures and support from staff, school life may continue as normal for any pupils with life-threatening allergies. We can provide information and resources to inform you on how to manage severe allergies – visit our www.allergyinschools.org.uk website – an advisory website for pre-schools and schools, including information for teachers, nurses, caterers, parents and students.

Raising awareness of the Campaign amongst your staff and pupils could save lives. With up to 2% of the population affected by life-threatening allergies, there may well be someone at your school who could benefit from the support of the Anaphylaxis Campaign. If you could display posters or would like someone to come and talk to your pupils during assembly time, please get in touch.

Fundraising for the Campaign would be very much appreciated. We rely upon grants and donations to continue our work and would welcome any contribution which you are able to make. Successful events organised by schools in the past have included:

• 'Mufti' or 'dress down' days – or why not have a non-uniform day with a difference and ask pupils to wear particular colours or fancy dress?
• collections at school plays and concerts;
• and a wide-range of sponsored events. How about a sponsored read (the number of books read, the number of pages of a difficult book or the time spent reading in silence) or a sponsored swim or sponsored sunflower growing? We can provide sponsor forms and literature about the Campaign to assist with your fundraising events. Please contact us to discuss your plans.

Important message for secondary schools - There are a variety of resources available from Giving Nation, designed to enable secondary schools to support their favourite charities. Giving Nation is the youth project of the Giving Campaign – an independent, national campaign supported by the voluntary sector and the Government. The long-term aim is to encourage a greater culture of giving whereby it is natural for everyone to try to improve the quality of life for others. Pupils' achievements can be recognised through entering the Giving Nation Awards (regional prizes of £1,000 available plus a charity trip abroad for the best G-Week diary). For further details visit www.g-nation.co.uk or contact Giving Nation on 020 7930 3154.
