Nut consumption in pregnancy

A Danish research study is suggesting that consumption of peanuts and tree nuts during pregnancy might decrease the risk of allergy-related illnesses developing in children.

The researchers used data from the Danish National Birth Cohort to examine associations between maternal peanut and tree nut intake during pregnancy and allergic outcomes in children at 18 months and seven years of age.

Their report states: “In this prospective cohort study we found that maternal peanut and tree nut intake one or more times per week during pregnancy decreases the risk of allergic disease in childhood. These results do not support avoidance of nuts during pregnancy.”

Note that contrary to some media coverage, this study does not suggest that nut consumption reduces the risk of peanut or nut allergy. Only asthma rates were assessed.
